TWO PROBLEMS WITH SELLING YOUR ART

First, your work is not that good…yet, the problem of being remarkable and second, nobody knows who you are, the problem of obscurity.

Here is a summary created to solve both of those problems for the new economy.

  1. Learn How the Art Market Works

Sell through the Gallery System or through your own channels. Anyone who helps you make money also wants some.

  2. Cultivate your Curiosity

Select a few topics and go deep and then try to use your artistic skills to turn them into art

  3. Avoid Originality

Instead, look for depth and breadth in sources of inspiration and reverse engineer the results

  4. Go Where the Money Is

Move between Experimental and Conceptual ways of making art. Try on new ideas through small bets.

  5. Solve an Interesting Problem

Create a solution to a problem for a specific group of people with your work.

  6. Cultivate InterestS outside of your art

Cross-pollinate ideas and ways of thinking from a new field to make you own work.

  7. Think in Metaphors

Try to explain a new field using what you already know.

  8. Reinvent Yourself

Use your day job or a professional interest as the role you play as an artist

  9. Collaborate with an expert

Find an expert and over a year, develop a project beneficial to you both. Extra points if they are not alive.

  10. Use Your Biography

Make a work of art or mind map that represents your biography and major changes in your life

  11. Use Fear

Define what those you seek to change are afraid of and embed it within your work

  12. Use Aspiration

Build a vision of the world those you seek to change would like to see

  13. Develop your own Point of View

Answers what your work is trying to do, and for whom and make work in a way that your audience happily shares.
